Our next adventure - June / July 2009

The Simpson

Summary

Simpson mapAfter meeting up in Broken Hill we travel to Tibooburra for the first night. Bright and early the next morning we head toward Innaminka via Cameron's Corner. We set up camp on the banks of Cooper Ck. The afternoon takes us out to the Dig Tree and the surrounding area (we could spend days here). Back to the pub for a magnificent meal. The next morning we pack up and set off toDig Tree Birdsville. There is some great scenery along the way. A break for lunch on the gibber plains and on we go to Birdsville. On arrival we set up camp at the caravan park, then spend the afternoon exploring the town and what it has to offer. Later we meet at the pub for dinner and discuss plans for the next day's adventures.

Now the fun begins:
Our day begins with a trip to "Big Red" the biggest sand dune in the desert. Here we learn how to set up our vehicles. I like to give all the eligible participants of the group the opportunity to conquer Big Red. This is both fun and educational. You also get your first glimpse at the desert and the next 3 or 4 days travel. Remember to bring your cameras. After a few hours of our first desert encounter, we head back to town for a free afternoon to relax and prepare for the next few days in the Desert.Big Red

Day 7 sees us heading off around Big Red, along the QAA line to Poepples Cnr. here we turn right along the French Line. This is the tough bit. However with what we have learnt so far, I believe you will find it a most rewarding challenge. Along the way we make camp. Trying to be settled by around 5pm each evening.

Let the cooking continue. Because we are in the desert we aim to keep things fairly simple, nevertheless delicious. A great meal, a glass of wine and an early night. We try to start travelling early each morning to get the "best" of the sand. Our day is full of challenging sand dunes and scenery, wild life, on coming travellers and excitement ( last trip we counted 48 on coming vehicles. All of which required the mandatory "G'day") . The next day takes us past Erabena Junction toward Colson Junction. We travel on toward Purni Bore as far as the day allows. Our next day should see us well though the hard work and on our way to "Paradise", Dalhousie Springs. Two nights here is just therapeutic.Dalhousie Springs

Next stop. Mt Dare. Ice cream and fuel. From here to Kulgara. Watch the speed and the tyres. It is not time to be hasty.

At Kulgara we say ooroo! (til we meet again)
